The United States has been transformed "from a beacon of light to an empire with beast-like tendencies," according to Canadian author C.T. Wilcox, as the world is headed "for a Vatican led and instigated cataclysm" while the U.S. population sleepwalks towards the edge of extinction.



Wilcox wrote these words, explaining his must read book called The Transformation of the Republic: The Origins of the Religious Hi-Jacking of the American Government and the Truth Behind the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln.



Transformation, said Wilcox, is a 375 page expose of Vatican and Jesuit intrigues and interference into the political structure of the United States and Europe. And according to the author it contains irrefutable evidence, shocking revelations and fully authenticated documentation - much of it hidden for almost 100 years - to support the his conclusion that the American Republic has been hi-jacked by the Papacy through the corrupt and evil influences and diabolic direction of the Jesuit Order.



"The people of the United States have been robbed of their own history. This is the worst kind of theft," writes Wilcox about how the history books have been changed to cover up the true intentions of the religious order behind the New World Order, adding his research proves without question the Jesuits killed Abraham Lincoln



"The Jesuits killed Lincoln and buried the evidence. But just as water seeks its own level, so does the truth eventually surface and make itself known. Deception and denial are only band-aids in the modern day world of intelligence, tooled by the Internet and other high tech investigative systems.



"Today anyone can become a good detective. If it had not been myself, someone else would have undertaken the task of doing the digging and piecing together the true story of President Lincoln's assassination."



In his book, Wilcox, sets up a substantial case on who really killed Lincoln, as the 16th President of the United States was well aware of the dangers the Monarchies of Europe and the Vatican posed to the young Republic.



"IN 1822 the Roman Catholic Monarchies of Europe conspired with the Vatican to destroy the concept of popular government, as found in the experiment of the United States, by means of infiltration, subversion and corruption," writes Wilcox. "The tools used were the Leopold foundation, which was set up by Prince Metternich of Austria and the Jesuit Order. The purpose being to use the financial and military arms of the United States to further the interests of the Papacy in its goal of putting all the world under the temporal submission of the Church."





Wilcox masterfully uncovers how Lincoln candidly discussed the role and limits of the U.S. government, as well as presenting sworn statements of priests regarding foreknowledge of Lincoln's murder, including private letters from Edwin Sherman, T.M. Harris, Louis Weichman and Robert Lincoln to Charles Chiniquy, a priest who Lincoln represented as a lawyer against the Jesuit Order.

"After the successful murder of the 'saviour of the nation', President Lincoln, on that Good Friday Easter weekend of 1865," writes Wilcox, "a date of which the symbolism was not lost, the Jesuit masterminds of that most evil crime began to pressure President Johnson to implement the 14th amendment to the United States' Constitution.



"This amendment effectively altered the citizenship away from the states' proper, under state authority, and transferred this to the Union, under a centralized Federal authority. Before this change one was considered a citizen of the United States by reason of being the citizen of a particular state.



"The truth can hurt; but it can also set us free. What do we have to gain from learning about this cruel conspiracy? Does it have any bearing on today's conspiratorial world of alphabet intelligence groups, weapons of mass destruction, bioterrorism, weather modification and other forms of warfare?



"What type of world do we want for our children and grandchildren? Or perhaps a better question: What elements of today's world do we wish to reform, in order to lift the veil of frustration and despair and unloose the shackles of ignorance and fear?



"It is my hope that the history presented on these pages, which has been suppressed for well over 100 years, and of which the American people particularly have been robbed, will cause them to wake up to the dangers being foisted upon them, recognize them for what they are, and then act to insure that the plot for their destruction will not come to its ultimate realization any time soon."



Wilcox makes the claim through his decade of research that the Jesuit Order is an association of highly organized warrior priests, being politicians first and foremost and being expelled from virtually every country they have had the opportunity to corrupt and destroy.



Their modus operandi, claims Wilcox, is political and educational infiltration and subversion and the fomenting of wars and revolutions in order to weaken and mold the target country into submissive pliability, to then be used to carry out their purpose of global ecclesiastically backed dictatorship.



He adds the United States is no exception to this global operation, being put directly in the cross-hairs of eventual martial law and destruction after the 911 attacks.



"The strikes upon the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 marked a pivotal point in the evolution of the experiment of popular government," writes Wilcox. "What followed has been nothing short of a pronounced continuation of a religious war, which had its origins in the Middle Ages, using the armed forces of a compliant host nation or alliance of nations according to the wishes of the Papacy.



"The ultimate goal is the eventual re-location of this so-called "Chair of Peter" to Jerusalem in order to direct and control all the people of the earth and the complete destruction of anything not in accord with Her dictates. Chief among these ideals, which are hated by the Church of Rome, are freedom of conscience, freedom of religion, freedom of the press and freedom of association; in fact, every fundamental freedom on which the United States was founded.



"This opposition to basic human rights was monumented in the famous Papal Bull of Pope Pius IX in 1864, the Syllabus of Errors; a direct response to the Constitution of the United States and its Bill of Rights.



"The timing of the issuance of this document was designed to be a deliberate political act for the express purpose of telling the world that the liberties of the United States and any other nation which has the audacity to implement representative self government apart from church consent was in direct opposition to God. This was at a crucial time of the War of the Rebellion in which the Papacy had openly sided with the Confederacy."



Although Transformation concentrates on the Roman Church, Wilcox said the principles can also be applied to any religious entity, particularly one that calls itself Christian, seeking to entangle itself with the political realm of which Jesus said it ought to be no part.



"Every person has the right to choose their religion and answer to their God," he adds. "But no person has the right to use the machinery of the State or various other methods to force that choice on their fellow human beings. Nor do they have the right to use religion as a means to a political end.



"The history presented is the result of eight years of research. The purpose is two-fold: 1) to bring out the truth that had been cleverly buried until now by the perpetrators of Lincoln's assassination, and 2) to point out that any cabal, even in today's world, can achieve its ends by using religion as a form of mind control.



"Ignorance and superstition perpetrated by religious dogma set the stage for victimization. Witness Palestinian suicide bombers who are brainwashed to believe that they are martyrs and Islamic beheading squads daily using the airwaves and cyberspace to force political ends in the nations of Christendom and in the nations where they reside.



"Likewise, witness I.R.A. and Protestant intrigues in Ireland or Israeli massacres of whole towns and villages on the West Bank and Gaza, in the name of a god who they believe has given them the right to this land because they have been misled to think they are still "chosen" when, in fact, the true chosen, a holy nation referred to as the 'Israel of God', which is spiritual in nature, are those who hold the same faith that Christ held and practice what he taught [Isa. 43:10; Jer. 31:31-34; John 15:16-19; Acts 15:14; Gal 6:16]. All of these belief systems are equally dangerous. They are tangible evidence of the repercussions of religious interference in political and nationalistic matters."



Recently, Wilcox's book was reviewed by Sharon K. Gilbert, for Watcher Magazine, who said:

If Americans ever want to reclaim their Republic, understanding the importance of the story behind jailed Ambassador Leo Wanta is a good starting point. In fact, the Wanta case may prove to be the "story of the century" even though it is cloaked in a complicated web of financial accounting, mystery and intrigue dating back to the end of the Cold War.



For starters, as unbelievable as it sounds, Wanta is the legal trustee according to a 2003 federal court ruling of more than 27.5 trillion dollars in repatriation assets held in overseas accounts and under protection for the American people.



The vast sum of money, now held in trust, are the fruits of exorbitant profits from Wanta's financial scheme to destabilize Soviet currency at the end of the Cold War after being assigned the task as a U.S. Treasury agent under President Ronald Reagan. Of course, if the money is released, Wanta is due a hefty sum for his own personal use, a fact which scares his Illuminati enemies, including the Bush and Clinton crime families since he will immediately become one of the richest men in the world able to wield enormous power.



But in a conversation this week from his Switzerland home, where he is still being held under house arrest for what he calls "bogus" Wisconsin state tax evasion charges, he promised to use all repatriation monies released to him for the "good of the American people" not his own personal gain.



"What needs to be done is to create a commission representing the people, using the facts in my case to expose politicians, forcing them to use the money for the public good not for their own benefit," said Wanta in an extended conversation from his Swiss home, suggesting his case could be used as financial leverage to once and for all change the corrupt Federal Reserve banking system.



According to binding contractual terms in the 2003 federal court case, under contracts with Wanta's proprietary company, Ameri-tech, about half the money would immediately go into the U.S. Treasury, immediately wiping out the national debt, and the other half would be retained by Wanta and Ameri-trust.



"If the money ever gets released with full protection for the American people, I am prepared to use the remaining sum in my private control only for the good of the people for things like roads, education and health care," said Wanta, leaving open the obvious question of who would the American people prefer to trust: proven liars and criminals like Bush and Clinton or Wanta, who appears to be playing ball with the people not the Illuminati New World Order banksters.



So the major question looms: Why is 27.5 trillion dollars still in financial limbo?



According to Wanta and other financial analysts, as the laws are written today, if the money was returned, it would immediately be stolen, being placed into Illuminati bankster accounts under the crooked private Federal Reserve laws illegally manipulating the financial future of America.



In essence, the 2003 federal court ruling protected this from happening and became a big stumbling block to people like Bush and Clinton who wanted the money kept under the public radar screen and secretly distributed into private accounts.



"The time has run out for a government appeal. But they never wanted that in the first place because it was something they didn't want the public to ever find out about," added Wanta.



And to show the secrecy and corruption going on behind the scenes, Wanta was illegally put in a Swiss dungeon for 134 days in the early 1990's to essentially get him out of the way.



Upon his release, he was then extradited and found guilty of "trumped up" and nickel and dime" state income tax evasion charges, spending another long jail term before recently being released on house arrest with 10 years remaining on his 22 year sentence.



To add insult to injury while Wanta was jailed, until the federal court 2003 ruling, Bush, Clinton and their Illuminati minions found a devious way to use Wanta's Ameri-trust funds as their "own personal cash cow."



To prove his point, Wanta has meticulously documented how "Bush, Clinton and his criminal gang of thieves" have stolen more than 700 billion dollars from Ameri-trust accounts while in jail. And while Bush and Clinton were busy getting their dirty hands even dirtier, Wanta points out they even refused to use $5 billion for a plan which he proposed through corporately funded activities for U.S. Hurricane Evacuation and Recovery Operations from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.



Wanta said the 1999 plan, under a company he formed called Marvelous Investments Unlimited, consisted of four expandable traffic lanes with double track railroad lines, underground freshwater pipeline, electrical systems, gas/oil pipeline, fiber-optic communication trunk line, lodgings, medical facilities, and much more as outlined in the overall MIL/design planning.



Wanta added the plan would have commenced in 1999 with full private sector funding solely by "Marvelous Investments Limited" through their lawful ownership and management of Parkhead Financial, Inc. with lawful repatriation corporate MIL/AmeriTrust/New Republic from repatriation assets still being held in trust for the American people.



However, the plan, which would have also employed 12-14,000 people, was derailed by Washington power brokers, clearly showing the crooked policy brokers, by axing the Wanta proposal, never intended to prepare the Gulf Coast for eventual disasters like Hurricane Katrina, instead leaving the area vulnerable for heavy disaster and death tolls even when money was clearly available.



"Just a sad thought that just maybe American lives taken by Hurricane Katrina would have been lessened and our National Economy may have been strengthened by these corporately funded activities," said Wanta, adding there was plenty of money available to have repaired the defective New Orleans levy system prior to Katrina if politicians has their priorities straight in the first place.



"I remain with deep sadness, but hopeful for the survival and reconstruction of New Orleans, and maybe now the original 'Hurricane Routes' can be implemented before I die with heavy heart and old age, something that should have been done by others that remain unknown and not caring for our American Rule of Law, inter alia. May Our Lord bless our departing soul and Our Great Nation."

The Patrick Fitzgerald investigation is spilling over across the pond to Switzerland, trying to trace the bank swindling and dirty dealings of Clinton-Bush bagman and Mossad agent, Marc Rich.

Sources near Fitzgerald claim the crime-busting Chicago special prosecutor is delving into why Rich was tipped off and able to evade a 1993 arrest attempt, ordered by FBI director William Sessions.

Those watching the Plamegate investigation hope Fitzgerald is the 'real deal' and not just providing a neo con dog and pony show, but sources claim the investigation is now meticulously looking into bank swindles by the Bush-Clinton mob, amounting to more than a trillion dollars, involving money earmarked for the U.S. Treasury.

And bank account records - tracing more than $750 billion of missing or stolen money - have been already provided as public record by Leo Wanta, the former U.S. Treasury agent assigned by Sessions to put the finger on Rich. (See accounts listed below).

In a telephone conversation Friday, Wanta said he still keeps the official 1993 Rich arrest warrant, as proof-positive the events took place as he reported.

However, in a strange turn of events, Wanta was jailed for his efforts, placed for 134 days in a Swiss dungeon, as Rich was allowed to slip free in a move, according to Wanta, leading to the theft of hundreds of billions- if not trillions - of U.S. Treasury funds by the Bush-Clinton mob.

After Wanta was framed and put in jail, reports linking Hillary Clinton to dipping into the Wanta-controlled accounts were recently verified by overseas investigators.

Investigators claim the First Lady travelled to Grenada, ordering a bank transfer from Bank Crozier Limite, Grand Anse P.O. Box 1005, St George's Grenada, West Indies.

Although the amount Clinton pilfered is unknown, estimates are she withdrew approximately $250 milliion from a Leo Wanta-controlled account, an account to be transferred to the U.S. Treasury listed under Marvelous Investment Limited, bank account number A/C 374-250.

Wanta, released form a long jail term last October, also said this week in a telephone conversation he has provided new information to overseas investigators in an effort to uncover even more of the stolen money, as he is fast on the trail on the vast sum of money with the help of foreign investigators and sophisticated computer software

"They are now messing with my computer, but so far we've successfully traced well over a trillion dollars and there is more to come, I'm sure," said Wanta, adding the original source of the money came from a financial scheme he put together on behalf of President Ronald Reagan to destabilize the Soviet currency at the end of the Cold War, subsequently amassing a fortune now amounting to more than 27.5 trillion dollars.

"We did so well with what we did, Bush and Clinton wanted to copy our methods. When I didn't play all with them, they wanted me out of the way so they could get their hands on the money."

After the Cold War ended, the money was placed in overseas accounts, Wanta being appointed legal guardian of the fortune by President Reagan with the understanding it be returned to the American people to be used for schools, roads and even infrastructure improvements in Louisiana to bolster the inadequate levee system..

To Wanta's detractors and skeptics, a 2003 federal court ruling, docket no. 02-1363-A, dated April 15, 2003, by Federal Judge Bruce Lee affirmed Wanta's position as legal trustor with the obligation to return a major portion of the money after taxes and trustor expenses back to the U.S. Treasury.

But when Bush senior and Clinton took over the reins of the White House, according to Wanta, things changed, as the vast sum of money was treated more like their own personal slush fund instead of property of the American people.

And the story and fight for the money became downright ugly right about the first week in July 2003, a time when Fitzgerald is now supposedly entering the scene, as a part of the original probe into the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame, leading to the arrest of White House lackey Lewis 'Scooter' Libby.

But in Switzerland that first week in July a lot more than the failed arrest of Rich arrest took place, including a visit by the late deputy White House counsel, Vince Foster, killed in a Washington park on his return to Washington D.C. on July 20, 1993.

According to Wanta, who recently appeared on Greg Szymanski's radio show, The Investigative Journal, he said the events surrounding Rich and Foster went like this:

"I was ordered in my capacity as Treasury agent and appointed Ambassador to arrest Marc Rich and bring him back to the States. However, I found out he was tipped off by Mossad agents not to meet with me. Rich then escaped, fleeing Switzerland.

"At the same time, I was ordered to give Vince Foster $250 million dollars earmarked for the Childrens Fund. It took us a few days to make the proper transactions of roughly $81 million each and then Foster left with the money for Washington.

"Then, for no reason, I was shackled by Swiss authorities and put in a Swiss dungeon, where I ended up spending 134 days. I found out Vince had heard about what happened and made attempts through the State Department to find out what happened and to get me out. But the next thing I heard, a Swiss guard passed on a message that Vince Foster was dead.

"Then later Itzhak Rabin tried to help, sending a letter which I have retained as proof. However, when authorities got word he was traveling to Switzerland on my behalf, I was immediately flown to the States, where I was charged with a trumped up Wisconsin state income tax charge, leading to a 20 year jail term.

"I finally was released last October. I don't know why, but I am now in the process of trying to account for the 27.5 trillion as well as account for the stolen money. They, being Bush and Clinton, really wanted me out of the way all these years so I couldn't return the money, but they didn't expect the federal court ruling in 2003 which I filed and prevailed.

"It's interesting they haven't appealed and now time has run out. I know they don't want anyone to know about this story and that is why the press has stayed silent."

Although Wanta has no idea what happened to the $250 million Foster had in his possession when he left Switzerland, the Fitzgerald probe needs to connect the dots in order to determine the real purpose of the Childrens Defense Fund, chaired by Hillary Clinton, and said to be used as her own personal slush fund, as well as front for CIA covert domestic and foreign operations.

It's also interesting to note the FBI and Kenneth Starr investigation into Vince Foster's death never looked into to his meeting in Switzerland as well as fully investigating the importance and disappearance of the $250 million dollars in Foster's possession when he left Switzerland.

Further, it should be remembered Rabin also wanted to help Wanta, sending him a letter still in Wanta's possession. Investigators, who believe Foster was assassinated, also point out Rabin met the same fate, being assassinated as well in 1995.

This was nothing less than the biggest bank heist in the history of humanity. Here's the kicker

The U.S. government already owns the land. It's been right there under our noses the whole time.

In fact, the government's appointed a small group of companies to begin the drilling.

And the profit forecasts are ridiculous. According to the RAND Corporation (a public-policy think tank for the government), this small region can produce:

Three million barrels of oil per day That translates into more than $20 BILLION a year.

These are the conservative estimates. The U.S. Energy Dept. estimates an eventual output of 10 million barrels of oil per day. At that rate, the money flow would be even greater.

I've written this letter to tell you everything I've learned about this rarely publicized oil reserve who's drilling it and how to get a piece of the world's biggest, untapped oil supply - before it's too late.

The Next American Oil Boom

There's a new source of oil in the American West.

Today, it sits idle - untapped - inside more than 16,000 square miles of rock and sand.

Geologists call what lies in this region, oil shale.

What is oil shale?

At first glance, oil shale looks like an ordinary black rock.

It feels grainy to the touch and greasy. You see, what's inside oil shale has huge governments, Big Oil, venture capitalists, and even everyday investors scrambling to stake a claim.

Oil shale - when heated - oozes bubbling crude.

This precious resource is rare - found only in a few select countries. Places like China, Brazil, Estonia, Morocco, and Australia.

But the real story is how much untapped oil shale lies beneath U.S. soil. As the chart to the right indicates, there's 4-times more oil shale in the U.S. than in all other countries combined.

Over the past 125 years, oil shale has been the secret oil source for a handful of nations. Specifically, those fortunate enough to have it

* China's been using oil shale since 1929. Today, China is the largest producer of oil from oil shale. It plans to double the daily rate of production soon.

* Estonia is an oil shale dependent economy. Over 90% of the country's electricity is fueled by shale oil. In fact, electricity run on oil shale is a chief export.

* In 1991, Brazil built the world's largest oil shale facility. They've already produced more than 1.5 MILLION tons of oil to make high quality transportation fuels.

* Jordan, Morocco, and Australia have recently announced plans to utilize their oil shale resources. All 3 governments are currently working to build oil shale facilities.

But all these countries' oil shale resources pale in comparison to the U.S. supply. As you can see from the table to the right, the United States dominates the oil shale market - with over 72% of the world's oil shale resources.

Our gargantuan supply of oil lies beneath an area called the Green River Formation - a barren stretch of land covering portions of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

World-renowned geologist Walter Youngquist calls the oil beneath the Green River Formation, "a national treasure."

Congress calls this area simply, "the next Saudi Arabia."

It's easy to see why

There are over 16,000 square miles of oil shale in the Green River formation...

Each acre holds 2 million barrels of oil - it's the most concentrated energy source on earth, according to the Energy Department.

The federal government owns 80% of this oil-rich land.

In fact, the government placed protective legislation on this land in 1930, forbidding anyone to touch it.

You see, the government always knew this land was saturated with oil - but getting it out has always been expensive.

Buying oil from foreign countries was always the cheaper bet. It has been for the past 80 years.

Wisely, the government kept the land around for a "rainy day", protecting it with 1930s legislation.

I'm sure you're aware of today's situation at the gas pump. Buying oil from foreign countries has gotten out of hand. The price of oil is sky-high. It's way too expensive to keep buying foreign oil. In other words, the "rainy day" has finally arrived.

The timing couldn't be more perfect. Oil shale technologies have begun to advance ­ drastically.

Companies are coming up with ways to extract oil from the Green River Formation very cheaply.

For example, one Utah-based company says it can extract the oil for as little as $10 a barrel. In fact dozens of companies have stepped forward with similar claims. With oil prices approaching $70 a barrel ­ these are pretty significant breakthroughs.

That's all the government needed to hear.

On August 8, 2005, President Bush signed into law, a mandate lifting the protective legislation on the Green River Formation.

This mandate is called The Energy Policy Act of 2005. It calls for the opening phases of oil extraction in the Green River Formation ­ the world's most concentrated energy source.

Fake TV News: Widespread and Undisclosed
A multimedia report on television newsrooms' use of material provided by PR firms on behalf of paying clients

Over a ten-month period, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) documented television newsrooms' use of 36 video news releases (VNRs)—a small sample of the thousands produced each year. CMD identified 77 television stations, from those in the largest to the smallest markets, that aired these VNRs or related satellite media tours (SMTs) in 98 separate instances, without disclosure to viewers. Collectively, these 77 stations reach more than half of the U.S. population. The VNRs and SMTs whose broadcast CMD documented were produced by three broadcast PR firms for 49 different clients, including General Motors, Intel, Pfizer and Capital One. In each case, these 77 television stations actively disguised the sponsored content to make it appear to be their own reporting. In almost all cases, stations failed to balance the clients' messages with independently-gathered footage or basic journalistic research. More than one-third of the time, stations aired the pre-packaged VNR in its entirety.

Report highlights include:


KOKH-25 airs a VNR from IntelKOKH-25 in Oklahoma City, OK, a FOX station owned by Sinclair, aired six of the VNRs tracked by CMD, making it this report's top repeat offender. Consistently, KOKH-25 failed to provide any disclosure to news audiences. The station also aired five of the six VNRs in their entirety, and kept the publicist's original narration each time.
In three instances, TV stations not only aired entire VNRs without disclosure, but had local anchors and reporters read directly from the script prepared by the broadcast PR firm. KTVI-2 in St. Louis, MO, had their anchor introduce, and their reporter re-voice, a VNR produced for Masterfoods and 1-800 Flowers, following the script nearly verbatim. WBFS-33 in Miami, FL, did the same with a VNR produced for the "professional services firm" Towers Perrin. And Ohio News Network did likewise with a VNR produced for Siemens.
WSJV-28 in South Bend, IN, introduced a VNR produced for General Motors as being from "FOX's Andrew Schmertz," implying that Schmertz was a reporter for the local station or the FOX network. In reality, he is a publicist at the largest U.S. broadcast PR firm, Medialink Worldwide. Another Medialink publicist, Kate Brookes, was presented as an on-air reporter by four TV stations airing a VNR produced for Siemens.
Two stations whose previous use of government VNRs was documented by the New York Times, WCIA-3 in Champaign, IL, and WHBQ-13 in Memphis, TN, also aired VNRs tracked by CMD. The March 2005 Times article reported that WHBQ's vice president for news "could not explain how his station came to broadcast" a State Department VNR, while WCIA's news director said that Agriculture Department VNRs "meet our journalistic standards."

Summary
Although the number of media formats and outlets has exploded in recent years, television remains the dominant news source in the United States. More than three-quarters of U.S. adults rely on local TV news, and more than 70 percent turn to network TV or cable news on a daily or near-daily basis, according to a January 2006 Harris Poll. The quality and integrity of television reporting thus significantly impacts the public's ability to evaluate everything from consumer products to medical services to government policies.

To reach this audience—and to add a veneer of credibility to clients' messages—the public relations industry uses video news releases (VNRs). VNRs are pre-packaged "news" segments and additional footage created by broadcast PR firms, or by publicists within corporations or government agencies. VNRs are designed to be seamlessly integrated into newscasts, and are freely provided to TV stations. Although the accompanying information sent to TV stations identifies the clients behind the VNRs, nothing in the material for broadcast does. Without strong disclosure requirements and the attention and action of TV station personnel, viewers cannot know when the news segment they're watching was bought and paid for by the very subjects of that "report."


From an ad for the broadcast PR firm D S Simon ProductionsIn recent years, the U.S. Congress, the Federal Communications Commission, journalism professors, reporters and members of the general public have expressed concern about VNRs. In response, public relations executives and broadcaster groups have vigorously defended the status quo, claiming there is no problem with current practices. In June 2005, the president of the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA), Barbara Cochran, told a reporter that VNRs were "kind of like the Loch Ness Monster. Everyone talks about it, but not many people have actually seen it."

To inform this debate, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) conducted a ten-month study of selected VNRs and their use by television stations, tracking 36 VNRs issued by three broadcast PR firms. Key findings include:

VNR use is widespread. CMD found 69 TV stations that aired at least one VNR from June 2005 to March 2006—a significant number, given that CMD was only able to track a small percentage of the VNRs streaming into newsrooms during that time. Collectively, these 69 stations broadcast to 52.7 percent of the U.S. population, according to Nielsen Media figures. Syndicated and network-distributed segments sometimes included VNRs, further broadening their reach.
VNRs are aired in TV markets of all sizes. TV stations often use VNRs to limit the costs associated with producing, filming and editing their own reports. However, VNR usage is not limited to small-town stations with shoestring budgets. Nearly two-thirds of the VNRs that CMD tracked were aired by stations in a Top 50 Nielsen market area, such as Detroit, Pittsburgh or Cincinnati. Thirteen VNRs were broadcast in the ten largest markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston.
TV stations don't disclose VNRs to viewers. Of the 87 VNR broadcasts that CMD documented, not once did the TV station disclose the client(s) behind the VNR to the news audience. Only one station, WHSV-3 in Harrisonburg, VA, provided partial disclosure, identifying the broadcast PR firm that created the VNR, but not the client, Daimler Chrysler. WHSV-3 aired soundbites from a Chrysler representative and directed viewers to websites associated with Chrysler, without disclosing the company's role in the "report."
TV stations disguise VNRs as their own reporting. In every VNR broadcast that CMD documented, the TV station altered the VNR's appearance. Newsrooms added station-branded graphics and overlays, to make VNRs indistinguishable from reports that genuinely originated from their station. A station reporter or anchor re-voiced the VNR in more than 60 percent of the VNR broadcasts, sometimes repeating the publicist's original narration word-for-word.
TV stations don't supplement VNR footage or verify VNR claims. While TV stations often edit VNRs for length, in only seven of the 87 VNR broadcasts documented by CMD did stations add any independently-gathered footage or information to the segment. In all other cases, the entire aired "report" was derived from a VNR and its accompanying script. In 31 of the 87 VNR broadcasts, the entire aired "report" was the entire pre-packaged VNR. Three stations (WCPO-9 in Cincinnati, OH; WSYR-9 in Syracuse, NY; and WYTV-33 in Youngstown, OH) removed safety warnings from a VNR touting a newly-approved prescription skin cream. WSYR-9 also aired a VNR heralding a "major health breakthrough" for arthritis sufferers—a supplement that a widely-reported government study had found to be little better than a placebo.
The vast majority of VNRs are produced for corporate clients. Of the hundreds of VNRs that CMD reviewed for potential tracking, only a few came from government agencies or non-profit organizations. Corporations have consistently been the dominant purveyors of VNRs, though the increased scrutiny of government-funded VNRs in recent years may have decreased their use by TV newsrooms. Of the VNRs that CMD tracked, 47 of the 49 clients behind them were corporations that stood to benefit financially from the favorable "news" coverage.
Satellite media tours may accompany VNRs. Broadcast PR firms sometimes produce both VNRs and satellite media tours (SMTs) for clients. SMTs are actual interviews with TV stations, but their focus and scope are determined by the clients. In effect, SMTs are live recitations of VNR scripts. CMD identified 10 different TV stations that aired SMTs for 17 different clients with related VNRs. In only one instance was there partial disclosure to viewers. An anchor at WLTX-19 in Columbia, SC, said after the segment, "This interview ... was provided by vendors at the consumer trade show," but did not name the four corporate clients behind the SMT.
In sum, television newscasts—the most popular news source in the United States—frequently air VNRs without disclosure to viewers, without conducting their own reporting, and even without fact checking the claims made in the VNRs. VNRs are overwhelmingly produced for corporations, as part of larger public relations campaigns to sell products, burnish their image, or promote policies or actions beneficial to the corporation.
